Uses Of Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection

Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection is indicated for the the prevention of pregnancy.
It is also used to treat Endometriosis, in hormone replacement therapy as well as certain types of cancer including cancer of the breast, kidney and endometrium (lining of the uterus). It works by inhibiting the growth of these types of cancer cells.

Depo-Provera Injection - Dosage And Administration

Contraception
The recommended dose of Depo-Provera for effective contraception is 150 mg every three months.
Endometriosis
The usual dosage is either 50 mg weekly or 100 mg every two weeks. Treatment for endometriosis is usually for at least 6 months.
Endometrial and Renal Cancer
The initial dose range of Depo-Provera is 500 to 1000 mg.There may be further treatment with an injection of 500 mg a week or less.
Breast Cancer
The usual dosage for breast cancer is 500 mg every day for 4 weeks. After the first 4 weeks, Depo-Provera is then given as a twice-weekly injection of 500 mg.

Depo-Provera Injection - Contraindications

Depo-Provera is contraindicated in known or suspected cases pregnancy or if the patient has known hypersensitivity to medroxyprogesterone acetate or any other inactive ingredients present in Depo-Provera. It is also contraindicated in patients that have active thrombophlebitis, or current or past history of thromboembolic disorders, or cerebral vascular disease. Other cases where Depo-Provera is contrindicated include Known or suspected malignancy of breast, Significant liver disease and Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.

Depo Shot Side Effects

The most common side effects of Depo-Provera Contraceptive shot are menstrual irregularities (bleeding or spotting), changes in menstrual flow, abdominal pain/discomfort, acne, drowsiness, weight gain, dizziness, headache, nervousness and decreased libido.
Other common side effects include breast tenderness, increased facial hair, decreased scalp hair and difficulty falling or remaining asleep. It can cause birth defects if taken by pregnant women.
