What are Fungal Skin Infections?

Fungal skin infections are infections of the skin caused by dermatophytes and yeasts, which are groups of fungi that are normally harmless. When these grow excessively, they can cause the symptoms of a fungal skin infection. For skin and nail infections, you can apply medication directly to the infected area. Most fungal infections occur because a person is exposed to a source of fungi. Fungal infections often start in the lungs or on the skin. Certain populations are are more likely to get a fungal infections and recurrence of infections. Generic Nizoral Cream (Nizral Cream) – Product Information

Generic Nizoral Cream (Ketoconazole Cream 2%) , contains the broad-spectrum synthetic antifungal agent, ketoconazole 2%, formulated in an aqueous cream. Ketoconazole Cream 2% is used for the topical treatment of tinea corporis(ringworm), tinea cruris (jock itch) and tinea pedis (athlete's foot) caused by Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes and Epidermophyton floccosum; in the treatment of tinea (pityriasis) versicolor caused by Malassezia furfur (fungal infection that causes brown or light colored spots on the chest, back, arms, legs, or neck); in the treatment of cutaneous candidiasis caused by Candida spp. and in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis (yeast infections of the skin).

Generic Nizoral Cream - Active Ingredient

Generic Nizoral Cream (Nizral Cream) is an azole antifungal used for topical treatment of seborrheic dermatitis in immunocompetent adults and children 12 years of age and older. The active ingredient present in Generic Nizoral Cream is Ketoconazole 2%.

Generic Nizoral Cream (Nizral Cream) - Contraindications

Generic Nizoral Cream (Ketoconazole Cream 2%) is contraindicated in persons who have shown hypersensitivity to the active ingredient Ketoconazole or any inactive ingredients of this formulation.

Generic Nizoral Cream (Ketoconazole Cream 2%) - Warnings

Ketoconazole Cream 2% contains sodium sulfite anhydrous, a sulfite that may cause allergic-type reactions including anaphylactic symptoms and life-threatening or less severe asthmatic episodes in certain susceptible people. The overall prevalence of sulfite sensitivity in the general population is unknown and probably low. Sulfite sensitivity is seen more frequently in asthmatic than in nonasthmatic people.

Generic Nizoral Cream - Storage Instructions

Keep Nizral Cream in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Protect the medication from light and do not allow it to freeze. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Generic Nizoral Cream - Dosage

The dosage of Nizral Cream for various indications is given below:
Cutaneous candidiasis, tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis and tinea (pityriasis) versicolor:
It is recommended that Ketoconazole Cream 2% be applied once daily to cover the affected and immediate surrounding area. Clinical improvement may be seen fairly soon after treatment is begun; however, candidal infections and tinea cruris and corporis should be treated for two weeks in order to reduce the possibility of recurrence. Patients with tinea versicolor usually require two weeks of treatment. Patients with tinea pedis require six weeks of treatment. Seborrheic Dermatitis:
Ketoconazole Cream 2% should be applied to the affected area twice daily for four weeks or until clinical clearing.

Generic Nizoral Cream (Nizral Cream) - Side effects

The common side effects of Generic Nizoral Cream are changes in hair texture, blisters on scalp, dry skin, itching, oily or dry hair or scalp, irritation, itching, or stinging in the place where you applied the medication . Rarely occuring but serious side effects of Nizral Cream include rash, hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, redness, tenderness, swelling, pain, or warmth in the place where you applied the medication. In case you experience any of the above serious side effects, call your doctor immediately. Ketoconazole may also cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while using this medicine.
