Generic Elavil (Tryptomer Tablets) – Product Information

Generic Elavil (Tryptomer Tablets) is used to treat symptoms of depression.Endogenous depression is more likely to be alleviated than are other depressive states. Amitriptyline Hydrochloride (Generic Elavil) is different from other pain relief drugs and is used to improve your pain control for nerve pain, for example shooting, stabbing or burning pains.

Generic Elavil (Tryptomer Tablets) - Active Ingredient

The active ingredient present in Generic Elavil Tablets (Tryptomer manufactured by Wockhardt Ltd.) is Amitriptyline Hydrochloride.

Generic Elavil Tablets - Contraindications

Generic Elavil Tablets is contraindicated in persons who have shown hypersensitivity to the active ingredient Amitriptyline Hydrochloride or any inactive ingredients of this formulation. It should not be given concomitantly with monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Hyperpyretic crises, severe convulsions, and deaths have occurred in patients receiving tricyclic antidepressant and monoamine oxidase inhibiting drugs simultaneously. Generic Elavil should not be given with Cisapride due to the potential for increaded QT interval and increased risk for arrhythmia. Tryptomer Tablets is not recommended for use during the acute recovery phase following myocardial infarction.

Generic Elavil Tablets - Warnings

Generic Elavil may block the antihypertensive action of guanethidine or similarly acting compounds. Tryptomer Tablets should be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures and in patients with a history of urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma or increased intraocular pressure. Tricyclic antidepressant drugs, including Generic Elavil, particularly when given in high doses, have been reported to produce arrhythmias, sinus tachycardia, and prolongation of the conduction time. Myocardial infarction and stroke have been reported with drugs of this class.
Close supervision is required when Generic Elavil is given to hyperthyroid patients or those receiving thyroid medication. Generic Elavil may enhance the response to alcohol and the effects of barbiturates and other CNS depressants.

Generic Elavil Tablets - Storage Instructions

Keep Generic Elavil Tablets in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Protect the medication from light and do not allow it to freeze. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Generic Elavil Tablets - Dosage

The dosage of Generic Elavil Tablets for various indications is given below:
Pain Relief:
The recommended starting dose for Amitriptyline HCl for pain is 10mg once a day. The dose is usually taken 1 or 2 hours before normal sleep time. Take the dose regularly every day. It may be 2 weeks before you start to see a real benefit. Your dose of Generic Elavil (Tryptomer Tablets) may be slowly increased to between 50mg and 75mg a day depending on how helpful it is for your pain relief.

Treatment of Depression:
The recommended initial dosage for adults is 75 mg of Amitriptyline HCl (Tryptomer Tablets) a day in divided doses. If necessary, this may be increased to a total of 150 mg per day. Increases are made preferably in the late afternoon and/or bedtime doses.

Generic Elavil Tablets - Side effects

The common side effects of Generic Elavil Tablets are given below:
Cardiovascular:
Cardiovascular Hypotension, syncope, hypertension, tachycardia, palpitation, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, heart block, stroke, non-specific ECG changes and changes in AV conduction. CNS and Neuromuscular:
Confusional states; disturbed concentration; disorientation; delusions; hallucinations; excitement; anxiety; restlessness; drowsiness; insomnia; nightmares; numbness; tingling, and paresthesias of the extremities; peripheral neuropathy; incoordination; ataxia; tremors; coma; seizures; alteration in EEG patterns; extrapyramidal symptoms, including abnormal involuntary movements and tardive dyskinesia; dysarthria; tinnitus.
Anticholinergic:
Dry mouth, blurred vision, mydriasis, disturbance of accommodation, increased intraocular pressure, constipation, paralytic ileus, hyperpyrexia, urinary retention, dilatation of urinary tract.
Allergic:
Skin rash, urticaria, photosensitization, oedema of face and tongue.
Haematologic:
Bone marrow depression including agranulocytosis, leukopenia, eosinophilia, purpura, thrombocytopenia.
Gastrointestinal:
Nausea, epigastric distress, vomiting, anorexia, stomatitis, peculiar taste, diarrhoea, parotid swelling, black tongue, rarely hepatitis (including altered liver function and jaundice).
Endocrine:
Testicular swelling and gynecomastia in the male, breast enlargement and galactorrhea in the female, increased or decreased libido, impotence, elevation or lowering of blood sugar levels, syndrome of inappropriate ADH (antidiuretic hormone) secretion.
Other:
Dizziness, weakness, fatigue, headache, weight gain or loss, oedema, increased perspiration, urinary frequency, mydriasis, drowsiness, alopecia.
