Treatment of Depression Using Generic Pamelor

What is Depression?

According to MediLexicon's Medical Dictionary, depression is "a mental state or chronic mental disorder characterized by feelings of sadness, loneliness, despair, low self-esteem, and self-reproach; accompanying signs include psychomotor retardation (or less frequently agitation), withdrawal from social contact, and vegetative states such as loss of appetite and insomnia."
Depressed people may feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, worried, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, or restless. They may lose interest in activities that once were pleasurable; experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions; and may contemplate or attempt suicide. Insomnia, excessive sleeping, fatigue, loss of energy, or aches, pains or digestive problems that are resistant to treatment may be present.
There are several types of depression(depressive disorders). Among the common types of depression are Major Depressive Disorder (major depression) and Dysthymic Disorder (dysthymia). Other types of depression include Psychotic depression, Postpartum depression (postnatal depression), SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and Bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness).

Generic Pamelor – Product Information

Generic Pamelor (Primox Tablets / Sensival Tablets) is used for the relief of symptoms of depression. Nortriptyline Hydrochloride is also used for the treatment of nicotine dependence as an aid to smoking cessation.
Depression is thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in parts of the brain. This affects your whole body and can cause emotional and physical symptoms such as feeling low in spirit, loss of interest in activities, being unable to enjoy life, poor appetite or overeating, disturbed sleep, often waking up early, loss of sex drive, lack of energy and feeling guilty over nothing. Generic Pamelor works by correcting this chemical imbalance and helps relieve the symptoms of depression.

Generic Pamelor - Active Ingredient

The active ingredient present in Generic Pamelor is Nortriptyline Hydrochloride.

Generic Pamelor - Contraindications

Generic Pamelor (Nortriptyline Hydrochloride) is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Patients hypersensitive to nortriptyline hydrochloride or any inactive ingredient in the product should not be given the medication.
  • Cross-sensitivity between nortriptyline hydrochloride and other dibenzazepines is a possibility.
  • Nortriptyline is contraindicated for the treatment of nocturnal enuresis.
  • Nortriptyline Hydrochloride is contraindicated during the acute recovery period after myocardial infarction.
  • The concurrent use of nortriptyline hydrochloride or other tricyclic antidepressants with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) is contraindicated. It is advisable to discontinue the MAOI for at least 2 weeks before treatment with nortriptyline hydrochloride is started.
  • Nortriptyline is contraindicated for the treatment of depression in patients 12 years of age and under.

Generic Pamelor - Dosage

For the Relief of Symptoms of Depression:
Usual Adult Dose:
25 mg 3 or 4 times daily; dosage should begin at a low level and be increased as required.Doses above 100 mg per day are not recommended.
Elderly Patients:
25 mg to 50 mg per day, in divided doses.
Adolescent Depression:
Not recommended for use in adolescent patients 13-18 years of age for the treatment of depression, unless under the supervision of a specialist.
As an Aid in Smoking Cessation:
Nortriptyline hydrochloride is administered orally in the form of tablets. Commence dosing prior to quit date at 25 mg/day and then increase to 75 – 100mg when feasible over 10 days – 5 weeks. The recommended starting time is 10 – 28 days prior to the quit date and gradually increase to achieve a maintenance dose of 75 – 100 mg/day when possible for a total of up to 12 weeks.

Side Effects of Generic Pamelor

The common side effects of Generic Pamelor tablets are Stomach or bowel problems (e.g. nausea, diarrhoea, constipation), Dry mouth or taste change, Change in appetite, Shakiness or tremor, Trouble sleeping, Dizziness or light-headedness (especially on standing rapidly), Tingling or numbness of the hands or feet, Ringing or other persistent noise in the ears, and Difficulty in passing urine.
Inform your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of the following as these side effects may be serious: Changes in the speed of your heart rate (increase or decrease), irregular heart beat, Agitation, anxiety, worsening of depression, Confusion or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there), Vision problems and Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice).The above side effects are rare.
Inform your doctor immediately or go to accident and emergency at your nearest hospital if you notice any of the following very serious side effects:Symptoms of an allergic reaction (symptoms include: swelling of the face, lips or tongue which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing), Severe chest pain or tightness, Thoughts of suicide, Fainting, seizures or fits. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation. These side effects are very rare.
