Generic Plavix (Clopidogrel Bisulfate) is a platelet inhibitor and prevent blood clots in coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease. It used to treat patients with Acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina (UA)/non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTEMI)& ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) ), recent myocardial infarction (MI), recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. Generic Plavix is available as Clopivas manufactured by Cipla Ltd., India. Generic Plavix which has the active ingredient Clopidogrel Bisulfate is also sold as Plagril as well as other brand names.

Mechanism of Action

Clopidogrel is an inhibitor of platelet activation and aggregation through the irreversible binding of its active metabolite to the P2Y12 class of ADP receptors on platelets.

Generic Plavix - Contraindications

Generic Plavix (Clopivas Tablets) is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Clopidogrel Bisulfate or any inactive component of this medication.
It is also contraindicated in patients with active pathological bleeding, such as peptic ulcer or intracranial hemorrhage.

Generic Plavix - Side Effects

Bleeding, including life-threatening and fatal bleeding, is the most commonly reported side effect of Generic Plavix (Clopivas Tablets).
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), sometimes fatal, has been reported following use of Generic Plavix, sometimes after a short duration.

Pregnancy and Nursing

Generic Plavix should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Nursing mothers have to either discontinue Clopivas (Generic Plavix) or nursing, taking into consideration importance of drug to mother.

Overdosage

Platelet inhibition by Generic Plavix is irreversible and will last for the life of the platelet. Overdose following clopidogrel administration may result in bleeding complications. Platelet transfusion may restore clotting ability.
