Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting

According to the latest figures available, Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) occurs in an estimated to be 25 to 30%, with severe, intractable PONV estimated to occur in approximately 0.18% of all patients undergoing surgery. PONV can lead to delayed recovery room discharge and unanticipated hospital admission, thereby increasing medical costs and causing a delay in returning to normal activities. The recently introduced class of antiemetics used for the prevention and treatment of PONV are the serotonin receptor antagonists like Ondansetron Hydrochloride (Generic Zofran Tablets) do not have the adverse effects of the older, traditional medicines used against vomiting and nausea. Headache and dizziness are the main side effects of these medications in the dosages used for PONV.

Causes of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV)

Postoperative nausea and vomiting results from anaesthesic, surgical, and patients factors. It has been observed that Gynaecological, urological, strabismus correction and middle ear surgery have a higher risk of PONV.

Generic Zofran Tablets – Product Information

Postoperative nausea and vomiting can be prevented by administering Generic Zofran (Emeset Tablets) one hour prior to anaesthesia. Generic Zofran Tablets are also used for the prevention of nausea and vomiting that may be caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. The active ingredient in Generic Zofran (Emeset Tablets) is ondansetron hydrochloride Dihydrate. Generic Zofran is available in tablets of 4 mg and 8 mg.

Generic Zofran (Emeset Tablets) - Contraindications

Generic Zofran is contraindicated in patients that have hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to ondansetron hydrochloride or any inactive component of this medicine. Concomitant use of Generic Zofran with apomorphine is also contraindicated.

Generic Zofran Tablets - Dosage

The recommended dosage of Generic Zofran for various indications is given below:
Emetogenic Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy:
The recommended oral dose of is 8 mg one to two hours before treatment, followed by 8 mg orally 12 hours later. The recommended oral dose is 8 mg to be taken twice daily. To protect against delayed or prolonged emesis after the first 24 hours, oral treatment with Ondansetron should be continued for up to 5 days after a course of treatment.
Post-Operative Nausea and Vomiting:
For prevention of post-operative nausea and vomiting, the recommended oral dose is 16 mg given one hour prior to anaesthesia.

Side Effects of Generic Zofran (Emeset Tablets)

The most common side effects of Generic Zofran in adults are diarrhea, headache, a sensation of warmth or flushing, constipation, hiccups and fever. These are all mild side effects.

Treatment of Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder using Generic Seroquel

Generic Seroquel (Q-Mind Tablets) - Product Information

Generic Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic which is used for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents of ages 13 to 17 years. It is also used for Acute treatment of manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, in adults, children and adolescents between the ages 10 to 17.
Generic Seroquel (Q-Mind Tablets) is also useful for acute treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder and maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder as an adjunct to lithium or divalproex in adults only.
The active ingredient in Q-Mind Tablets is Quetiapine Fumarate. Quetiapine Fumarate is an antipsychotic agent, which is white to off-white crystalline powder which is moderately soluble in water. Tablets are available in strengths of 25 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg and 300 mg.

Generic Seroquel Tablets - Contraindications

Generic Seroquel is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Quetiapine Fumarate or any other component of this product.

Generic Seroquel - Dosage

Generic Seroquel can be taken with or without food. The recommended dosage varies as per the indication being treated and is individualised. For the treatment of Schizophrenia in Adults, Generic Seroquel should generally be administered with an initial dose of 25 mg twice daily, with increases in total daily dose of 25 mg to 50 mg divided in two or three doses on the second and third day, as tolerated, to a total dose range of 300 mg to 400 mg daily by the fourth day.
For the treatment of Bipolar Mania in Adults, the recommended dosage of Generic Seroquel Monotherapy or along with lithium or divalproex is as follows:
Day 1: Twice daily dosing totaling 100 mg.
Day 2: Twice daily dosing totaling 200 mg.
Day 3: Twice daily dosing totaling 300 mg
Day 4: Twice daily dosing totaling 400 mg. Further dosage adjustments up to 800 mg/day by Day 6 should be in increments of no greater than 200 mg/day

Side Effects of Generic Seroquel (Q-Mind Tablets)

The most common side effects of Generic Seroquel Tablets observed in adults are drowsiness, somnolence, dry mouth, dizziness, constipation, asthenia, abdominal pain, postural hypotension, pharyngitis, elevations in serum triglyceride levels, elevations in total cholesterol, weight gain, decreased haemoglobin, lethargy, extrapyramidal symptoms and dyspepsia.

Overdosage

During clinical trials, survival has been reported in acute overdoses of up to 30 grams of Quetiapine Fumarate and a death has been reported in a clinical trial following an overdose of 13.6 grams of Quetiapine Fumarate alone. Most patients who overdosed reported no adverse events or recovered fully.

Generic Nexium Tablets (Nexpro) – Product Information

Generic Nexium Tablets (Esomeprazole Magnesium) are used in the treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Risk Reduction of NSAID-Associated Gastric Ulcer, H. pylori Eradication to Reduce the Risk of Duodenal Ulcer Recurrence, Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions Including Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. Generic Nexium is available as Nexpro Tablets. Nexpro Tablets are manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd., India.

Side Effects of Generic Nexium (Nexpro Tablets)

The most common side effects reported in adult patients (18 years of age and above) treated with Generic Nexium with an incidence rate of 1% or more include headache, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, abdominal pain, constipation, and dry mouth.
In case of pediatric use (1 - 17 years of age) the common possible side effects with an incidence rate of 1% or more include headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and somnolence
